Elliott Bulloch Roosevelt (1860-1894)
Elliott Bulloch Roosevelt, of New York & Abingdon, Virginia
He was born at Oyster Bay on Long Island, New York. He was the brother of President Theodore Roosevelt and the father of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. He was educated at St Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, but had to drop out after falling ill. His father died when he was 18-years old and he inherited a fortune. Preferring not to work, he instead indulged his passion for big game hunting in America, India and Africa. He was remembered as a charming man and a loving father, but his drinking eventually saw him become a chronic alcoholic which resulted in him being exiled to Virginia. He attempted suicide by throwing himself from a window, only to survive the fall. He died a few days later following a seizure. He was married in 1883 at Gramercy Park, New York City. He and his wife were the parents of three children.
