Eliot Joseph Benn Rose (1909-1999)

"Jim" Rose C.B.E., Director of the International Press Institute, etc.

He was born in Kensington, London, and was educated at Rugby and New College, Oxford. During the war he reached the rank of Wing Commander with the R.A.F. while working as an Intelligence Officer at Bletchley Park for which he was awarded the U.S. Legion of Merit. He was Literary Editor of The Observer (1948-51); Director of the International Press Institute at Zurich (1951-62); Co-Founder of the Runneymede Trust for race relations; and, Chairman of Penguin Books (1973-80). He married Pamela, daughter of Thornely Carbutt Gibson, who he met while they were both working in intelligence at Bletchley Park. They were the parents of two children.
