Elias Butler (1805-1878)

of "Crumwold" Hyde Park, Dutchess Co., New York

He was born in New York. He retired from business in 1842 when he purchased an estate from Augustus Thomas Cowman (1814-1854) just south of Hyde Park on which he built a house that he named "Crumwold". Here, "he spent the remainder of his life enjoying his library and the oversight of the farm and the garden with its greenhouses and vinery.
