Elias Butler (1805-1878)
Elias Butler, of "Crumwold" Hyde Park, New York
He was born in New York. He retired from business in 1842 when he purchased an estate from Augustus Thomas Cowman (1814-1854) just south of Hyde Park on which he built a house that he named "Crumwold". Here, "he spent the remainder of his life enjoying his library and the oversight of the farm and the garden with its greenhouses and vinery. He took great interest in politics, though he never would accept any office". He was a Vestryman and Senior Warden at St. James' Church, Hyde Park. He married a cousin, Mary Angeline Butler, and had at least one son.
