Eliakim Hutchinson (1711-1775)
of Boston, Massachusetts; Judge of the Court of Common Pleas
He was a distant cousin of his contemporary, Governor Thomas Hutchinson: Thomas' great-great-grandfather, William, was a brother of Eliakim's great-grandfather, Richard. Eliakim was one of the richest men of his era in Boston. In 1764, he purchased the Shirley-Eustis House (pictured) at Roxbury from his father-in-law, William Shirley, who had been appointed Governor of the Bahamas in the same year. After his death in 1775, the property was confiscated by the government and it passed through several hands until 1819 when it was sold to Governor William Eustis in 1819.
