Elbert Jefferson Anderson (1800-1888)

Lt.-Col. Elbert J. Anderson, Merchant, of New York City & Portsmouth, R.I.

He was born and grew up in New York city. He was educated in local schools, and "while not a college graduate, became a man of excellent taste and extended culture". In 1820, he was commissioned as Ensign in the 85th New York Infantry, and subsequently rose to be its Lieutenant-Colonel. . Anderson was a director of The Manhattan Fire Insurance Company; the Farmers' Loan & Trust Company; and The Phoenix Bank. In 1827, Anderson became junior partner in the commission dry goods firm of Belah Tiffany & Co., at the corner of Maiden Lane and Pearl Street. In 1847, his wife inherited the Redwood farm at Portsmouth, six miles from Newport, and they eventually moved there permanently. E.J. Anderson was remembered for his, "high reputation for integrity... his quick intelligence, uniform courtesy and attractive manner", which won him a large circle of friends in Newport and saw him sit on several boards of arbitration.

In 1825, he married Martha Maria Ellery, a grand-daughter of William Ellery, Chief Justice of Rhode Island and one of the Signers of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. They were survived by a son (Elbert) and four daughters: Mrs George von Gorrissen of Hamburg, Germany; Miss Marie M. Anderson; Mrs John Boker; and Mrs Thomas G. Ford.
