Egbert Benson (1746-1833)
Co-Founder and 1st President of the New-York Historical Society
He was born in New York City and became a lawyer and U.S. Congressman from New York. He wrote "A Vindication of the Captors of Major André" and a "Memoir on Dutch Names of Places". He co-founded and was the first President of the New-York Historical Society. He died unmarried at Jamaica, Long Island.
