Egbert Benson (1746-1833)
Co-Founder and 1st President of the New-York Historical Society
He was born in New York City and became a lawyer and U.S. Congressman from New York, Attorney General of New York, and Chief of the U.S. Circuit Court, etc. He wrote "A Vindication of the Captors of Major André" and a "Memoir on Dutch Names of Places". He co-founded and was the first President of the New-York Historical Society. He died unmarried at Jamaica, Long Island.
