He was born at Cleveland, Ohio. In 1918, with a net worth estimated at $125-million inherited from his father, he was tied with J. Ogden Armour as the 6th-richest person in the United States on Forbes magazine's first "Rich List," behind John D. Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick, Andrew Carnegie, George F. Baker, and William Rockefeller. He and his wife lived at the Harkness Mansion (see images) at 1 East 75th Street & Fifth Avenue, New York City. They died without children.
