Dr. Edward Shippen (1758-1809)

Dr. Edward Shippen V of Burlington, New Jersey

He was born in Philadelphia, the only surviving son of his father. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (A.B.) before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland (M.D.). After travelling for a short period in Europe, he returned to Philadelphia where he took up his medical practice before settling at White Marsh, Montgomery County, and finally Burlington, New Jersey, where he continued to practice until his death. In 1809, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Footman of Philadelphia. They were the parents of seven children, of whom just one son (Richard Shippen) married and had children.
