Edward Everett (1794-1865)

U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. Senator & Governor of Massachusetts etc.

He was born at Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was educated at the Boston Latin School and Phillips Exeter Academy before graduating from Harvard (1811) where he was a member of the Porcellian Club and the Hasty Pudding Club. He began his career as the Professor of Greek Literature at Harvard but was later drawn to politics. He served as: U.S. Secretary of State; U.S. Senator from Massachusetts; 16th President of Harvard University; U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom; 15th Governor of Massachusetts; and, was generally agreed to be one of the greatest orators of his era. He married Charlotte, daughter and heiress of Peter Chardon Brooks, reputedly Boston's first millionaire and still considered today as one of the 100 richest Americans in history. They were the parents of five children who lived to adulthood (listed).
