Edmund Dwight (1780-1849)

Merchant, Manufacturer & Philanthropist, of Boston; State Senator of Massachusetts

He graduated from Yale and founded the Dwight Cotton Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and was one of the founding members of the Hadley Falls Company which established Holyoke, Massachusetts. He was one of the earliest backers of the Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati Railroad and a leading force behind the creation of the Massachusetts Board of Education. He was reputed to be worth $1.5-million at his death making him one of the richest men in Massachusetts.
