Edith, Countess di Castelmenardo (1858-1914)

Edith (Van Buren), Countess di Castelmenardo

She travelled frequently to Europe, particularly to Nice whete her brother was the U.S. Consul from 1897. There, she met Gennaro Vessicchio, who claimed to be titled Neapolitan by the name of Count Gennaro di Castelmenardo. They were married in 1900 and returned to the States to live wither her mother at her family home in Englewood, New Jersey. After her mother died and she received a substantial inheritance, they returned to live in Italy, where she discovered he was not only a fraud and a felon, but also a philanderer. She divorced him in 1907 but negotiated successfully with the real count’s family to purchase the title for herself, which received much press.
