Edgar Morris Phelps (1876-1953)

of Slate Hill Farm, Middletown, Rhode Island

He was born at New Rochelle, New York. Through his mother he was lineally descended from Lewis Morris, Signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. He graduated from Princeton (1899) and the Columbia Law School. He practiced law at New Rochelle and was a Judge of the District Court. In 1914, he moved to Newport, Rhode Island, and bought Slate Hill Farm at Middletown where he raised pigeons commercially. In 1946, he retired to 5 Red Cross Avenue in Newport. He was a member of the Middletown Town Council, Treasurer and then President of the Newport Reading Room. He was a member of the Clambake Club and the Sons of the Revolution. He married Caroline Hunter Kane who grew up at Stonor Lodge, Newport. They were the parents of three sons (listed) including Henry, second husband of Muriel Vanderbilt
