Ebenezer Coffin (1763-1817)

of "Coffin Point Plantation" St. Helena Island, Beaufort Co., South Carolina

He came from a prominent Loyalist family in Boston and was the brother of Thomas Aston Coffin, Commissary-General of England (and for whom he named his son and heir), and the uncle of Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin, R.N., 1st Baronet. His father-in-law was a planter in South Carolina and bequeathed him 1120-acres and 63-slaves. In 1801, Ebenezer built the Coffin Point plantation house approached by a half-mile avenue of oaks, and with "stable and negro houses". By 1813, he owned 96-slaves who worked 232-acres of cotton fields and 124-acres of potato and corn fields.
