Dr. Robert Berkeley (1776-1818)

M.D., murdered by his slaves at Rock Hill, Warren Co., Virginia

He was building a brick house "of very extensive dimensions" near the Shenandoah when he was murdered by his slaves and his body "consumed in a tremendous fire." Three of his slaves were tried and convicted of his murder and the others who were suspected of having been involved were sold. His relation, John Rust, purchased the property and completed the house, "in a plain, neat style."
