Dr. James Henderson (1683-1743)
of "Greenwich" New York City
He was a Scottish Physician who came to London and worked at the Greenwich Hospital. For services rendered, he received a land grant in 1724 from King George I for 16,000-acres of virgin forest in New York's Mohawk Valley. He came out to New York and married Thysie, daughter of Dirck Benson, a successful merchant of New York. They didn't settle on Henderson's land grant (that was still occupied by Mohawk Indians) and instead built a house on a small estate on the outskirts of New York City that they named "Greenwich" - today's Greenwich Village.
