Dr Benjamin Tredwell Jr. (1735-1830)

Dr Benjamin Tredwell, of East Williston, New York

A native New Yorker, he was the son of Colonel Benjamin Tredwell (1702-1782), of Hempstead, Long Island. He started his career as a surgeon in the British Navy. One of his positions was on board Captain Bayard's ship the Hercules, privateering against the French. He returned home age 27 with sufficient funds to marry the daughter of the Rev. Samuel Seabury (1706-1764), of Hempstead, Long Island. Two years later (1764), he purchased a a 51-acre farm at Great Neck in Queen's County on Long Island. He continued to practice as a physician and was the medical consultant to the British government for public cases. In 1776, he declared himself a Loyalist to the King.
