David Van Ness (1745-1818)

Brigadier-General David Van Ness, of Dutchess County, New York

He was the brother of Peter who built Lindenwald. He served during the Revolution as a Captain in the Continental Line and a Major in the Dutchess County Militia. He maintained his commission in the militia and from 1793 to 1801 served as Brigadier-General. In 1790, he was elected to the New York State Assembly. He was Presidential Elector in 1792 and 1812; and was a State Senator from 1800 to 1802. He lived at Maizefield in Red Hook until 1815 when he moved to Troy where he died.
