David Gardiner (1636-1689)
2nd Proprietor of Gardiner's Island, New York
He inherited Gardiner's Island from his mother during which time it was devised as a manor and granted to him by patent from Governor Dongan of New York for the yearly fee of "one lamb on the first of May". This makes Gardiner’s Island the only property in the U.S. still held as part of a grant from the English Crown. David also owned considerable acreage at Southold and represented East Hampton at the General Court in Hartford (Connecticut), where he died. He was married in England at St. Margaret's, Westminster (London), and they were the parents of four children (listed).
