Daniel Rogers (1789-1822)

Daniel Rogers, killed in a steamboat explosion in New Orleans

He built the floating dry dock at Mobile, Alabama, which was one of the first if its kind in the country. He married one widow Mather, 15-years his senior, and they had one daughter, Mary Cecilia Rogers, "the beautiful cigar girl," made famous by Edgar Allan Poe. Daniel was killed in a steamboat explosion in New Orleans. His widow placed their daughter in a cigar shop, which very much displeased the Rogers family, but before they could interfere, her tragic death occurred.
