Daniel Carroll (1696-1751)

of "Rock Creek" & "Darnall's Chance" Upper Marlboro, Prince George's Co., Maryland

He was born in Ireland at Aghagurty, Co. Offaly. His father, Keane Carroll, held the lease to Aghagurty and legend has it that he was outlawed and charged with treason for his participation in the Irish Confederate Wars. However, his father is supposed to have been born about 1654 and the Irish Confederate Wars were fought between 1641 and 1653. The story continues that his father was exiled to Spain and Daniel emigrated to Maryland in 1717 when the trustees of forfeited estates refused to reinstate his father's land at Aghagurty. On his arrival in Maryland, he said to have been helped by his influential elderly kinsman, Charles Carroll "The Settler". Having become a successful merchant, in 1727 Daniel married Eleanor Darnall, the niece of Mrs Charles (Darnall) Carroll, through whom he inherited "Darnall's Chance" where they raised seven children.
