Danford Henry Knowlton (1846-1894)

D. Henry Knowlton, Stockbroker, of Knowlton & Co., New York City

He was born in New York City and graduated from the College of New York. He started his career in the offices of his father, Danford Knowlton, a prominent sugar merchant. He became a partner in Parker, Knowlton & Co., coal merchants, before becoming Senior Partner of the Stock Exchange House, Knowlton & Co. During the Civil War, he fought with the "Silk Stocking" Regiment, the 7th New York Militia. He was, "a prominent figure in society, and a general favorite". He was the first President of the New York Athletic Club and a member of several clubs. He lived between 102 East 38th Street and Stonegate at Balmville, New York. He married Mary Johnes and they had 4-daughters (1) Edith, Mrs Allan Appleton Robbins (2) Madeleine, Mrs John Elliott Cowdin (3) Natalie, Mrs J. Insley Blair of Blairhame (4) Louise, Mrs Buell Hollister.
