Col. William "Tangier" Smith (1654-1705)

Governor of Tangier & 1st Lord of the Manor of St. George, Long Island, New York

He was born in England at Higham Ferrers in Northamptonshire. When he was twenty, he was commissioned a Colonel and was sent to Africa as Mayor and then Governor of Tangier. He lived in Tangier until 1683 before returning to England and then sailing to America in 1686. In New York, he settled at Sautucket and acquired upwards of 40,000-acres. In time, he became Chief Justice of the Prerogative Court and President of the Governor's Council of New York". He married Martha Tunstall of Putney near London and they had fourteen children, but only five survived him.
