Col. Louis Livingston (1824-1904)

of "Green Lawn" Tivoli-on-Hudson, Dutchess Co., New York

His first name, "Louis," was frequently misspelt "Lewis". He was remembered for his courtly manners and he was known to his friends as, "the Marquis". He distinguished himself as a volunteer officer during the Civil War. In 1862, he was commissioned as a Captain and aide-de-camp to General Crawford. He was honored by brevets to Major for Antietam and South Mountain, and Lieutenant-Colonel for "conspicuous gallantry" at Gettysburg. He resigned his commission in 1864 and in 1867 inherited his father's home in Tivoli-on-Hudson, "Green Lawn/Green Hill". On October 5th 1870, he married Alice, daughter of Samuel Mickle Fox. They died without issue.
