Col. Josiah Dwight (1715-1769)

J.P., Judge, Merchant & Manufacturer, of Springfield, Massachusetts

He was born at Hatfield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale. He served as a Lieutenant under his father at Ticonderoga and was later promoted to Colonel in the Militia. He was a Justice of the Peace and Judge of the Court of Common Pleas (1750-68) for Hampshire Co. But, he was best known as a merchant and the owner of 5,000-acres. He manufactured potash and owned an iron founder, and when he died his estate was valued at £9,458. His first wife (married 1750) died without issue and by his second wife (married 1757) he had five children.
