Col. James Barbour III (1734-1804)

Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses for Culpeper County

He was a Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1764) and County Lieutenant of the Militia of Culpeper County who rose to the rank of Colonel during the Revolutionary War. For his service, he was granted 3,500-acres of land in Kentucky where he was Judge of the first court ever held in the new state being the head of the commission appointed to settle disputed land titles.
