Charles Stuart Forbes (1856-1926)
Artist, of Paris, Venice, Boston & New York
He was an American born at Geneva in Switzerland. From 1887, he studied with Carolus-Duran in Paris, exhibiting at the Paris Salon (1887-1889) and the salon at the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts (1891). At the latter, he met John Singer Sargent and with Ralph Wormeley Curtis, Julian Pennington and Julian Story they painted Robert Browning at Browning son's Palazzo Rezzonico in Venice. Sargent painted Forbes' portrait (see images) circa 1889 and today it hangs in the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, California. After Venice, he lived and worked in Boston before moving to New York.
