Charles Stewart (1725-1780)

"Old Ironsides" Ship's Captain & Merchant, of Philadelphia

He was the son of Robert Stewart (b.1700) and the grandson of Robert Stewart (b.1674), an officer in the army of William & Mary and the younger brother of Maj. Charles Stewart, of Gortlee, Co. Donegal. In Philadelphia, Charles became a ship's captain and co-owner of a merchant business that traded in rare linens and silks from the Far East. His wife was the niece of a Lord Mayor of London and after he died she married Capt. Britton, member of Congress and personal friend of George Washington.
