Charles Carter (1707-1764)

Colonel Charles Carter, J.P., of "Cleve" King George Co., Virginia

He was born at the Corotoman Plantation, Lancaster Co., Virginia, the third son of 'King' Carter, "the richest man in Colonial America". He was educated in England before returning to Virginia in 1724. He initially lived on one his father's properties in Middlesex County before acquiring the Cleve Plantation in King George County. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace and Colonel in command of the militia. He was instrumental in founding three towns along the Rappahannock River and as a Burgess he was Speaker John Robinson's most loyal lieutenant. He was a proponent of agricultural reform and as a wine-grower he was awarded a medal by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. He was married 3-times. By his first marriage he had 4-children (listed above) who lived to adulthood. By his second marriage to Anne Byrd, of Westover, he had 7-children (listed above) who lived to adulthood and married. By his third marriage he had 1-daughter (listed above).
