Charles Bulfinch (1763-1844)

Charles Bulfinch of Boston, "America's first native-born architect"

He was born at Boston and studied at the Boston Latin School. After graduating from Harvard University he took a two-year tour of Europe (1785-87), studying the architecture of Robert Adam in London and taking influence from Palladian architecture in Italy. On returning to America, he started practice as an architect in 1788, the same year in which he married his first cousin, Hannah Apthorp.
