Charles Benton Mease (1788-1867)
Charles Benton/Bruton Mease, Merchant, of Charleston, S.C. & New York City
His father, John, emigrated to America from Houndsditch in England after being declared bankrupt. Charles became a Dry Goods Merchant, but he too lost his fortune as a result of the Civil War. Charles and his wife were the parents of eleven children, six of whom died in infancy leaving five (listed) who survived to adulthood. They included the then famous children's author with the pen-name "Aunt Fanny" and Nina, mother of New York's famous Gilded Age architect, Stanford White.
