Charles Grant, 7th Baron de Longueuil (1844-1898)
Charles Colmore Grant, of Hyde Park St., London & "Birchwood" Pitlochry, Perthshire
He was born in England at Alwington Villa, Cheltenham, and was educated at Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire, while his family returned to "Alwington" in Kingston, Ontario. In 1878, he married Mary (d.1914), daughter of Thomas Wayne of Glandare, Glamorgan, and they lived first at 7 Hyde Park Street in London before retiring to "Birchwood" Pitlochry, Perthshire. He became the 7th Baron de Longueuil on his father's death in 1879. Because it was created (in 1700) for his ancestor when the French controlled Canada, he successfully petitioned Queen Victoria to have it recognised within the British Order of Chivalry. On 4th December, 1880, “The Queen has been graciously pleased to recognise the claim of Charles Colmore Grant Esq., to the title of Baron de Longueuil in the Province of Quebec Canada.” He died at the Holland House Hotel in New York City. Having no children, the title passed to his half-brother, Reginald.
