Caroline (Petigru) Carson (1820-1892)

Mrs Caroline (Petigru) Carson; Artist, of Charleston, New York & Rome

She was born in Charleston, South Carolina, where "she grew up a beautiful and accomplished woman, well read in the literature of several languages, and not more remarkable for grace and charm than for nobleness of mind, generosity, and kindliness. Like her father, she was devoted to the cause of the Union, but with the old order of things passed away her home, with the friends and associations that were part of her life, and she went forth into a changed world. She resided for some years in New-York, but circumstances brought about a removal to Rome. There she cultivated painting, always her favorite pursuit, and lived to the end in an atmosphere that soothed in some degree the bitterness of separation from her native land and the familiar faces of friends." She became estranged from her husband but was in Rome she was a close friend of his relation by marriage, Charles Astor Bristed. She was survived by two sons.
