Carlos Ripley Chapman (1809-1892)
Rev. Carlos R. Chapman, of Willoughby, Ohio; formerly of Tolland, Connecticut
He was born in Tolland, Connecticut, where his family had been prominent since their ancestor Captain Samuel Chapman (1696-1747) J.P., settled there before being killed at Louisbourg in the French & Indian War. Carlos was named for his relation Colonel Carlos Chapman (1792-1874), J.P., Sheriff of Tolland and Member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives from Tolland, 1836-37. Carlos was born a Presbyterian but after his mother died when he was two he was brought up by his devoutly Methodist grandmother at Rootstown, Ohio. He entered the Methodist Church and was a minister at Willoughby, Ohio, where he, "lived a cheerful, Christian life (as) an upright citizen, and was greatly beloved and respected by his friends and neighbors".
