Joseph Walker Binney (1836-1898)

Founder of the Peekskill Chemical Works; Officer in the Charge of the Light Brigade

He was - according to family legend - an officer in the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. He was said to have been aide-de-camp to General Vivian and was one of the lucky few to avoid the Russian Artillery in the infamous "Charge of the Light Brigade". Afterwards, he emigrated to New York where he married his wife and founded the Peekskill Chemical Works. He lived in New York City as a paint and color importer and his son invented the Crayola Crayon.
