Capt. Joseph Cabot (1746-1774)

"Captain Cabot," Shipmaster of Essex Street, Salem, Massachusetts

His biography is given in the Pickering Genealogy (1897) by Harrison Ellery which states: "There is a small miniature of him... now in the possession of Francis H. Lee" which corresponds to the image above in the Frick Reference Library which had later been incorrectly attributed to his father although the notes made by the archivist support the fact that the image does indeed depict this Captain Cabot: "judging from the costume and the apparent age of the subject, it seems evident that this miniature represents a man of a later generation than Joseph Cabot (1720-67)". Captain Cabot lived in the house on Essex Street (see images), "built for his father by a strolling English architect, who built at the same time the Pickman house and the Governor Gage house". In 1768, at Salem, he married Rebecca, daughter of the "eminent merchant" Timothy Orne.
