Cadwallader David Colden (1769-1834)

U.S. Congressman, New York State Senator & Mayor of New York City

His father was a Loyalist and he was taken to Canada at the age of sixteen by his guardian, George Duncan Ludlow. Despite having been dispossessed of the family home where he was born, on his return to the States he became an attorney (and District Attorney on Long Island) and served as a Colonel of Volunteers in the War of 1812. He was elected Mayor of New York City (1818-21), Member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-23), and Member of the New York State Senate (1824-27). He was President of the anti-slavery New York Manumission Society in 1815, and a leading member of the New York Society for the Prevention of Pauperism. He married Maria, daughter of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel Provoost, 1st Bishop of New York, and had one son.
