Col. Burwell Bassett (1735-1793)
State Senator, of "Eltham" & "Waverly" New Kent Co., Virginia
His image shown here is often misattributed to his son of the same name. It was painted by Charles Willson Peale in "Summer, 1778" when his son was fourteen years old. In 1757, he married (secondly) the sister Martha (wife of George Washington) and their daughter married one of Washington's nephews. He owned 6,000-acres in New Kent County and more than 1,000-acres in neighboring Hanover County.
