Brig.-Gen. Robert Swartwout (1779-1848)

Naval Agent at New York City & Proprietor of the New Jersey Salt Marsh Company

He was born at Poughkeepsie, New York. He was a Colonel in the New York Militia and was appointed Quartermaster-General with the rank of Brigadier in the War of 1812. He was given command of the 4th Brigade on the St. Lawrence River after the Battle of Chrysler's Farm. After the war, he lived in New York City where he went into business with his brothers, acquiring and developing significant areas of land in New Jersey ("Swartwout"). He was a loyal supporter of Aaron Burr and in 1803 fought a duel against Richard Riker, shooting him in the leg. In 1808, he married Margaret, daughter of Daniel Dunscomb and sister-in-law of Philip Hone. They had seven children.
