Bernard Kane (1712-1802)

Bernard O'Kane/Kane, Attorney, of Dublin

He was the son of Evanue O'Kane and grandson of Sir Donall O'Cahane by his wife Una O'Neill, of Shane's Castle, Co. Antrim. Bernard and his brother were both sworn in as Attorneys at King's Inns, Dublin. They were either brothers or cousins of the founders of the Bank of Kane & La Touche, Dublin. Bernard's brother was the "notorious" Redmond Kane, said by J.E. M'Kenna to have been "a pervert and a lawyer of extensive practice in Dublin". The Kane brothers were crypto-Catholics, ie., among those who not only switched religions from Catholic to Protestant, but also adapted their surnames to appear more English - Kane had been O'Kane and before that O'Cahan.
