Bernard Moore Carter (1780-1842)

of Charles City County, Virginia, and "wandered for several years in Europe"

He married Lucy Lee in 1803 and thereby became the brother-in-law of General "Light Horse Harry" Lee (whose second wife was Bernard's sister) and the uncle of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. His father gave him "Woodstock" in Fauquier County but although his wife lived there until 1817, he never did. From about 1812 he took to wandering around Europe, leaving his wife and children at home. He and Lucy eventually separated after he returned circa 1820. He settled £22,000 on her and she moved permanently to Philadelphia. They were the parents of five children who reached adulthood (a son, Bernard, died young).
