Bernard Carter (1834-1912)
LL.D., Corporation Lawyer of Baltimore & Provost of the University of Maryland
He was born at "Goodwood" in Prince George's County, Maryland. He graduated from St. James' College, Washington (A.M.), and Harvard Law School (LL.B.). He was generally regarded as one of the finest corporation lawyers of his generation in America and established Bernard Carter & Sons which had offices in Baltimore and Washington D.C. He was Counsel of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company. He was Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, City Solicitor of Baltimore, President of the Bar Association of Baltimore City, Member of the Baltimore City Council, and a Member of the Maryland Constitutional Convention. He was Professor of Law and from 1895 Provost of Maryland University. In 1858, he married Mary Ridgely, granddaughter of Charles Carnan Ridgely, of Hampton, 15th Governor of Maryland. They lived between 1212 Eutaw Place, Baltimore, and "Goodwood" in Prince George's County, Maryland. They were the parents of nine children.
