Benjamin Hallowell (1699-1773)

Benjamin Hallowell, Shipbuilder, of Boston, Massachusetts

He was a Navy agent for the British government and as a merchant at Boston he was extensively engaged in trade and shipbuilding. He was one of the Kennebec Proprietors and owned  50,000-acres at Hallowell, Maine, as one of the largest owners in the Plymouth Company. He was the father of eight children. His grandson, Robert Hallowell, took the name of Gardiner on receiving the bulk of his grandfather's (Dr Sylvester Gardiner's) large landed estate on the Kennebec. His sons included the Loyalist Captain Benjamin Hallowell Jr., of Boston; and, his sons-in-law included the Plantation owner and merchant banker Samuel Vaughan and the British General Paston Gould.
