Benjamin Chew Howard (1791-1872)

LL.D., of "Belvidere" near Baltimore; U.S. Congressman from Maryland

He was born at "Belvidere" (see images) near Baltimore and he was named for his maternal grandfather, Chief Justice Benjamin Chew of Cliveden, near Philadelphia. He served on the City Council of Baltimore from 1820 and in both Houses of the Maryland Legislature. He was twice elected U.S. Congressman from Maryland (1829-33, 1835-39) and from 1843 to 1860 was Clerk (Reporter) of the U.S. Supreme Court. He had sixteen children of whom eight (listed) survived to adulthood.
