Benjamin Barney (1780-1859)

Farmer & Captain in the Militia, of Henderson, Jefferson Co., New York

He moved from Guildford, Vermont, to Ellisburgh (now Henderson) in Jefferson Co., New York, in about 1806. He built a rough log cabin, carved out a small farm, and served as a Captain in the militia during the War of 1812. Despite his frugal existence, his small cabin was filled with books and he helped found the Union Literary Society. He was a great-grandfather of the playwright Natalie Clifford Barney.
