Augustus Thomas Cowman (1814-1854)
Augustus T. Cowman, of Hyde Park, Dutchess County, New York
He was the architect (albeit amateur) of St. James' Church at Hyde Park, New York. He based his design on the churches he had seen on a trip to England from where he had recently returned. His father, John, had sailed ships in the employ of John Jacob Astor. John saved his money and became wealthy after investing in New York real estate. Augustus married Ann, daughter of Captain James Gillinder.
