Arthur Gordon Rose (1793-1880)

A.G. Rose, President of the Bank of Charleston

He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the grandson of Hugh Rose, 15th Baron Kilravock. He was the President of the Bank of Charleston in the 1850s. He kept a townhouse on Rutledge Street and in 1831 bought the Lowndes Grove plantation. After losing his two eldest children just two years apart, he and his second wife left for an extended tour of Europe with their daughter Elizabeth and her family. They settled in London, where Rose died in 1880. He was survived by three children. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Wigg Barnwell, in 1823 and they had two children. Seven years after she died he married Elizabeth Gardner and they had three children.
