Arthur Frederic Schermerhorn (1860-1933)
Lt.-Colonel Arthur F. Schermerhorn, Assistant Adjutant-General of New York
He was born in New York where his ancestor arrived from Schermerhorn in Holland in 1636. He enlisted in the 7th Regiment in 1879 and served the rest of his career with the New York National Guard. He fought in the Spanish-American War and was Assistant Adjutant-General of the State of New York during the First World War. He was a co-founder of the Army & Navy Club at New York. He was married twice: (1) Frances (d.1914), daughter of Richard Levick, President of the National Rubber Company (2) Harriett, daughter of George Pullman, President and Founder of the Pullman Sleeping Palace Car Company. He died leaving what he supposed was just over a million dollars to his second wife, but was later found to be insolvent. He lived between 111 East 48th Street and Spring Lawn that he renamed Schermeer in Lenox, Massachusetts.
