Ariana Randolph Wormeley (1833-1922)
Mrs Ariana Randolph (Wormeley) Curtis, "The Dogaressa"
She was born and raised in England, the daughter of a Liberal-minded, American-born Admiral in the British Navy who came from an old Virginian landowning family. In 1853, she was married at Newport, Rhode Island and settled with her husband in Boston where they had two sons. They left America in 1878 and lived at the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice from 1881. They also kept a winter apartment in Rome. The artist John Singer Sargent nicknamed her as "the Dogaressa" (similar to "the Duchess").
