Anita (Hargous) DeForest (1857-1932)

Mrs Anita (Hargous) DeForest

She was a Franco-American born in Mexico. Her grandfather, Jean Illion Hargous, of Bayonne in the South of France, was a Captain in the French Navy who was in command of the French ship ‘Jason’ under the orders of the Comte de Grasse during the Revolution. On December 4th 1882 at St. Bartholomew’s Church, New York, Anita married the rare book and art collector George Beach De Forest. They lived between 14 East 50th Street, New York City, and “Train Villa” (see images) on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. They had one son, Louis Stanislaus Hargous De Forest.
