Andrew Christian Zabriskie (1853-1916)

He was one of the largest real estate owners in New York City through property inherited from both sides of his family. He managed his properties from 52 Beaver Street which had been built by his maternal grandfather, William M. Titus, on land owned by his great-grandfather, Thomas Gardner, "a wealthy resident of Paramus (New Jersey)... who was somewhat eccentric in disposition". He was a Captain in the 7th Regiment of the N.Y.N.G. for twenty years and after retiring continued to be referred to as "Captain Zabriskie". In 1908, he was nominated as a Democrat to represent Congress but lost by a narrow margin. He was also President of the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society but resigned when his proposal that they merge with the New-York Historical Society was rejected. He kept various townhouses in Manhattan (12 East 30th Street, 2 West 56th Street & 34 West 53rd Street) and aside from that the mansion he built near Rhinebeck, Blithewood, he also had another on the island he owned ("Province Island" but then known as "Zabriskie's Island") on Lake Memphramagog in Quebec on the border of Vermont, where he kept his steam yacht. He married and had two children.
